What the Calendar Is

The Chinese Gender Calendar is a folklore tradition, not a scientific method. It starts with two inputs: the mother's traditional Chinese lunar age at conception and the lunar month when conception happened. Those values are then checked against a fixed chart that returns boy or girl.

The important detail is that both values are lunar-calendar values. A Gregorian birthday or a Gregorian conception month cannot be used directly without conversion, because the lunar year and lunar months begin on different dates each year.

How to Use It

1. Convert the mother's birth date into the lunar calendar.
2. Convert the conception date into the lunar calendar and keep the lunar month.
3. Calculate the mother's traditional lunar age at conception.
4. Look up the lunar age row and lunar month column in the traditional chart.

Why Lunar Age Matters

Western age counts completed birthdays. Traditional Chinese nominal age starts at one and advances with the lunar year. That is why a person who is 27 by Western age can sometimes be 28 or 29 by traditional lunar age, depending on the dates involved.

Why Conception Month Matters

The chart uses the lunar month of conception. Gregorian months do not line up perfectly with lunar months, and the boundary can fall in the middle of a Gregorian month. This is especially important around Chinese New Year and during years with leap lunar months.
